Leather backpacks: popular companions for everyday use
Leather backpacks are timeless classics, perfect for everyday life and professional settings alike. The range includes everything from minimalist leather laptop backpacks to colourful leather styles with decorative details. In addition to masculine and feminine options, you’ll also find unisex models—most commonly in a nostalgic vintage look. The variety of shapes is equally impressive and includes trapezoidal, rectangular and rounded backpack styles. Accordingly, features vary: for instance, a leather backpack may be secured with a two-way zip, drawstring with flap, or fold-over closure. A business leather backpack often includes a rear trolley strap and ventilated back panel. Even without padding and ventilation channels, leather backpacks offer good airflow, as the material naturally has breathable properties—especially beneficial in backpacks. Urban versions come with a front pocket for essentials and usually a valuables pocket at the back. Depending on the purpose, most models range from 5 litres (women’s leather backpacks) to 30 litres (business leather backpacks). With larger designs, make sure the shoulder straps are wide enough to stay comfortable when carrying heavier loads.
Leather backpack materials and their properties
Not all leather is the same! Each type has its own characteristics. Most backpacks are made of cowhide, which is durable and strong, and typically a by-product of the meat industry. A leather backpack made from calfskin stands out with a finer grain and higher tear resistance. Buffalo leather is known for its pleasant feel but is one of the more delicate options. Leather backpacks made from lambskin are especially smooth and buttery soft but less robust than other types. These leather backpacks can weigh up to two kilos—goatskin, by contrast, is considered particularly lightweight. It is thin yet tough, making it one of the highest-quality leather types. Regardless of the variety, every genuine leather backpack is built to last. This durability makes leather companions a more sustainable choice in the long term.
Another advantage: due to the natural characteristics of animal hides, each leather backpack is one of a kind. Over time, it develops a beautiful patina that enhances its unique character. Backpacks made from so-called pull-up or oiled leather—typically derived from cowhide—develop this patina especially quickly. These marks and signs of use tell your personal story and are very much welcome. Leather backpacks can also vary in texture. Whether smooth, suede or patent, the surface treatment often reflects the overall style. Smooth leather appears classic and clean, while suede shifts in tone depending on the finish, giving off either a casual or rugged feel. That’s why leather laptop backpacks often have a smooth surface for a professional appearance. Compact leather backpacks with a suede-like finish are usually women’s models that double as handbag alternatives. Similarly, patent leather backpacks are typically feminine city styles. Embossed and woven textures are also common on women’s leather backpacks—from crocodile-style prints to intricate rhombus patterns made from diagonally braided leather strips.
Vegan leather – does it count as a genuine leather backpack?
Admittedly, the term “vegan leather” can be misleading. It combines two concepts that are, in principle, contradictory. Vegan means completely free from animal-based materials—so a vegan leather backpack is not a traditional genuine leather backpack. Instead, these models are made from innovative plant fibres or synthetic materials that mimic the appearance of real leather but are 100% animal-free. The visual resemblance is why they are referred to as vegan leather.
How to care for your leather backpack properly
Whether you've chosen a business-ready leather laptop backpack or a characterful vintage model, proper care will extend the life of your favourite companion. It’s best to treat your leather backpack with a water-repellent spray before its first use and regularly thereafter—to protect it from moisture and prevent water stains. Bonus: this also shields the leather from minor dirt and marks! If your backpack does get wet, never dry it in direct sunlight or on a radiator. Instead, stuff it with paper and let it air-dry. Suede models are especially delicate and shouldn’t be cleaned with water. Use specialised brushes, erasers or gentle lotions instead. Smooth or patent leather backpacks can be wiped with a damp cloth. For tougher stains, use leather creams or balms. Always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions and test any product on an inconspicuous area first. Storage is equally important if you want your leather backpack to last: keep it in a breathable cotton bag. If storing for a longer period, stuff it to help maintain its shape.
